Social West Puts the Social in Social Media

Last week, I attended Social West, the largest Social Media and Digital Marketing Conference on the Prairies. It was a well organized, interactive and dynamic 2 day event built to empower and educate social media and marketing professionals. The speakers were experts in their field and shared social media strategies for businesses.

There were almost 400 social media professionals from over 5 provinces and 1 territory in attendance . We ranged from independent entrepreneurs, like myself, to marketing professionals and students. Over 18% were business owners while the remainder worked for small to large businesses. As a group we had over 1,400,000 Twitter followers and over 840,000 Instagram followers.

During this 2 day conference I met over 25 new colleagues, many of which I had previously talked to on social channels but had yet to meet. It was easy to connect with and meet new people during the conference due to several factors. Foremost was the Social West app, which was released, days before the conference. It listed all the attendees with their pictures which enabled the conversation to start before the conference (brilliant!) and continue after as well. The 2nd feature was the universal use of the #SocialWest hashtag which allowed all participants to jump into any conversation they were interested in. We collectively sent 4456 tweets! The 3rd feature which made networking fluid was the daily social activities of the conference which allowed everyone to socialize after each day’s sessions and discuss the days’ events.

Mike Morrison, the founder of Social West, kept us all engaged with his unflagging energy and enthusiasm.

In these difficult economic and social times we all debate carefully where to spend our networking dollars and as well as our time. Social West was worth every penny and every minute was enjoyable. Thank you Mike Morrison, the Social West speakers as well as the diverse and dynamic participants for remembering the “Social” in Social Media.

I encourage you to save the date, June 14-16th, 2017. I know I am!
