The Power of Mentorship

Mentorship is a personal development relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced, less knowledgeable or younger person.”

Six years ago I became a Big Sister in the Big Brother Big Sister program in Calgary.

What was my motivation? What were my expectations?
Since I had been volunteering my entire life and I had been a stay at home mom, I thought it would be a great fit. My children were growing up and I wanted to help out a family while enjoying the benefits of spending time with a child. It turned out to be so much more than all that.
I met Tasha when she was 11 years old. She was very shy and quiet. At the beginning of our relationship I selected most activities and organized the logistics of our outings. I would ask her after our outing if the activity was a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
Fast forward 6 years. Tasha graduated from high school in June of this year. She heads to University in the fall. She is an intelligent, strong, confident young woman. Her family is wonderful and very supportive of her education. She selects, researches and organizes most of our activities. She is an avid volunteer and has spearheaded many clubs in high school.

She is planning on pursuing a career in dentistry. (As my readers know, I used to be a dentist as well).
When I look at Tasha I feel the same immense love and pride that I feel with my own children.
Tasha would succeed at anything she put her mind to, with or without my influence.
However, do I see my influence in her? Yes I do and it fills me with pride to have made such an impact in her life.
BBBS is a wonderful volunteer organization that matches “Bigs” (mentors) and “Littles”(mentees) for a mutually beneficial relationship.
If you choose to mentor a child, don’t be surprised if you receive more than you give.
Tasha and I will remain lifelong friends after BBBS and that gift is priceless.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.
